Today's @artribune includes an article by @giusepp Today's @artribune includes an article by @giuseppe.smorto about a magical place: Africo, an abandoned village in the heart of Aspromonte, in Calabria, Southern Italy.

The column has the evocative title 'Giro d'Italia' and is curated by @emiliagiorgi, who I thank for this opportunity.

In this space dedicated to Africo, you will also find my photographs of this place to which I feel deeply connected.

My project “Un luogo bello” exhibited in China My project “Un luogo bello” exhibited in China at @lishuiphotographyfestival and curated by @formatfestival.

[Re]Source explores, through the work of seven artists, the ways in which we are connected to and affected by our most vital resource - the natural land around us. The works presented explore the myriad of ways in which human existence effects the land in sometimes devastating ways and how in contrast we are shaped by the energy and natural push and pull of nature’s core elements.

The artists exhibited traverse issues of land destruction through the impacts of climate change or the power and greed of man; how the juxtaposition of beauty and the harsh reality of land impacts on peoples’ livelihoods; the spiritual impact and bond that our land can create to how light connects us and the land directly to the past through space.

FORMAT International Photography Festival is organised by @derbyquad and supported by @aceagrams and the Creative and Cultural Industries Research Centre @derbyuni.

Featuring Artists: AJR Moxon (UK), Md Fazla Rabbi Fatiq (Bangladesh), Alicia Bruce (UK), Wei Weng (China/Australia), Mary Farmilant (US), Alessandro Mallamaci (Italy), Yzza Slaoui (Morrocco).

Pics of the day by @alessandromallamaci from the series "Un luogo bello".

Southern Italy was the cradle of Magna Graecia and "Un luogo bello" (literally "a beautiful place") is one of the possible translations of the term "aghatè", which probably gives the name to the valley of Sant’Agata river. This is a place of traditions and real estate speculation, a place ruled by the so-called 'Ndrangheta, in which some villages are five minutes away from one another at summertime and one hour away during winter. A place with unique naturalistic features and illegal buildings all over it. This is my place. I can't help but love it. It is a beautiful place.

The portfolio got a special mention at Urbanautica Institute Awards 2020 (Category: Anthropology and Territories).

The project will be on show for the first time at Lishui Photography Festival this November, in China.

Un Luogo Bello(A Beautiful Place)
by Alessandro Mallamaci @alessandromallamaci
These are places where popular traditions live on, the joy of being together, the way cattle are raised which is not affected by the passing of time, the ruins of abandonment, tracks rusted by time, undergrowth overtaking cement, walls which are crumbling and walls which continue to resist. Alessandro is neither trying to denounce nor seeking an objective viewpoint. He builds a sequence of images of details and wider visions which, page after page, guides us through a land we do not know, which is his alone.

'During a flight to Keflavík airport, it is possible to watch the sun set for many hours, and staying in Reykjavík during December is like living in a month-long sunset.'

Alessandro Mallamaci (@alessandromallamaci) is an Italian photographer who focuses on long-term projects. He is represented by Galleria Valeria Bella (@galleriavaleriabella).

His series 'The Longest Sunset' was shortlisted in the Landscape category in the Sony World Photography Awards 2023.

Mallamaci writes about his project:

'I conceived The Longest Sunset as a psychoanalytic journey into photography. However, after I started taking photographs, I realised that what really mattered was feeling free and being able to shoot without any preconception. Therefore, the direction for these works has been guided by intuition and feeling; by having an honest approach and maintaining focus on the quiet, secret and intimate relationship between the photographer and the landscape that he has fallen into.

The ancient struggle of the survival of man against nature forms the background for images that don’t try to give answers. These photographs represent natural elements that are deeply connected to the unknown. There is a surreal aspect to the composition that obscures the interpretation of the image.'
